Maria Magdalena

Enrique Gasa Valga Dance Company

A dance production by Enrique Gasa Valga set to Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew Passion and music by Roberto Tubaro

Mary Magdalene: sinner, saint, beloved, witness. Between defamation and veneration, her true story remains shrouded in the half-light of tradition to this day. Choreographer Enrique Gasa Valga approaches this enigmatic female figure with the power and intimacy of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew Passion – one of the most moving works in music history. Between chorales and arias, a dance performance unfolds in which faith, desire, guilt and redemption become a physical experience.

In the title role: the extraordinary Oumy Cisse, whose dance gives Mary Magdalene a voice beyond words. An actor portrays Judas, weaving Bach’s musical Passion together with spoken language and drawing the audience deep into this timeless story.

For the set design and costumes, the team behind the acclaimed production Saving Salvador – A Tribute to Dalí returns: Birgit Edelbauer-Heiss is responsible for the costumes, while Alberto Talarico and Valeria Angesi create the set design. Together, they create a space between the sacred and the sensual, where Bach’s music, dance and storytelling merge into a deeply moving Gesamtkunstwerk.
